A celebration of colour and light
Since 2020, MIDO has been paying tribute to one of Mexico’s oldest celebrations. This year it is releasing “Círculo de Luz”, a spectacular limited edition version of the Commander dedicated to the mystical Día de Muertos*. In an explosion of colour, its dial celebrates the iconic skull, which sits on a decorated background inspired by the Aztec Sun Stone**, one of the most famous Mexican sculptures. Thanks to a mechanism specially adapted for this model, its colours change with the days: always vibrant, surprising, and even glowing in the dark.
Red, blue, green, purple, yellow, white, pink, orange! Each new day is a surprise with the festive Commander “Círculo de Luz”, as different colours bring life to its deep black dial. Presented in an exclusive box, this limited edition of 777 pieces – a number linked to spiritual connection and good luck – pays tribute to the Día de Muertos, and underscores MIDO’s creative audacity and watchmaking expertise. Included on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2008, the “Mexican Day of the Dead” is distinguished by its joyfulness. Born from a blending of Catholic and indigenous traditions, it celebrates the continuity of life through the remembrance of beloved ancestors. With close ties with Mexico – this is the 5th limited edition created to mark this occasion – MIDO is giving a completely new and utterly breathtaking aesthetic to the Commander, its timeless icon since 1959. The design on the dial shows the skull, the instantly recognisable emblem of this celebration, surrounded by the Aztec Sun Stone motif. Specially adapted for this limited edition, the mechanism which is usually at the heart of the brand’s BIG DATE models reveals a new colour each day through several openings on the dial. At night, eight shades of Super-LumiNova® bring the design to life in a spectacular show of multicolour phosphorescence. The case and bracelet, in satin-finished steel with black PVD coating, create a striking contrast. The heart of this original and mystical Commander “Círculo de Luz” beats to the rhythm of an impressively reliable movement. Its latest-generation Swiss automatic mechanism, the Caliber 80, defies the passage of time – in line with the tradition of the Día de Muertos.
Day & Night: a soulful reflection of life’s circle
From the vivid hues of life to the glowing light of death, it is a journey of endless transformation and continuity. The black dial of the Commander “Círculo de Luz” Limited Edition offers a vibrant face, featuring a multicoloured skull and Aztec Sun Stone motif. Furthermore, thanks to various openings – at 6 o’clock, for the teeth of the skull, but also all around – the colours change with each day. The BIG DATE disc – usually used to display the date in a window – has been ingeniously coloured to showcase these varying shades. Perfect readability is ensured by the baton hands, which feature white Super-LumiNova®, the brightly coloured indexes, which also have a luminescent tip, and a slender minute track outlined in white. At night, this fascinating face comes to life: eight luminescent shades adorn the skull and the iconic Aztec Sun Stone motif which encircles it. A domed and faceted sapphire crystal protects this unique design.
To highlight the striking colours of the dial, MIDO has paired them with a case and stainless steel bracelet coated entirely in black PVD. The satin-finished surfaces create a matte effect, underscored by the roundness of the Commander’s signature bezel, which has been polished to enhance its brilliance.
An impressive mechanical heart
This extraordinary, limited edition beats to the rhythm of the Caliber 80, which benefits from the latest technological innovations. A Nivachron™ balance spring, which is highly resistant to impacts and magnetism, is combined with a power reserve of up to 80 hours, thereby ensuring excellent reliability. Furthermore, MIDO has opted to decorate this Swiss automatic movement with beautiful traditional Côtes de Genève on the oscillating weight, which is also engraved with its logo.
In honour of the Mexican Día de Muertos and the circle of life, the Commander “Círculo de Luz” Limited Edition celebrates the passage of time as a vibrant, multicoloured celebration.
